4 Reasons Why Dental Implants Are Better Than Dentures}

Submitted by: Eli Thornock

The technology used in dentistry keeps on improving.

It used to be that if you wanted to replace missing teeth, dentures were your only option.

But now theres a better way. Dental implants were invented pretty much on accident back in 1952, when a surgeon placed a small titanium cylinder in a patients jawbone to test how well the jawbone would heal, and then that surgeon found that the titanium cylinder was unexpectedly difficult to remove.

It turns out that titanium has special properties that allow it to fuse with bone very effectively. In the decades since that titanium/bone relationship was first discovered, the dental implant has been refined to the point where it is far and away the most effective solution for replacing a missing tooth.

Here are 4 reasons why dental implants are better than dentures:

1. No Slippage

Dentures arent fixed. Theyll slide around a little bit and impair the way you talk, eat, etc. Its something youll start to get used to, but its still always there, slipping around and making it more difficult to do the things that you do several times every day

This isnt something youll have to deal with if you opt for dental implants instead of dentures. With dental implants, the prosthetic tooth is held in place by a titanium post that goes through the gums and is secured to the jawbone, so theres absolutely no slippage.

2. Prevent Your Jawbone from Deteriorating

That interfacing with the jawbone feature of dental implants does more than just prevent slippage. Dentures just cover up the problem, but when a tooth is completely missing the jawbone underneath loses the support it needs and will start to deteriorate, which leads to an unattractive sunken-jaw look and possibly even an infection. Therefore, dental implants prevent the jawbone from deteriorating.

Dental implants replace the root of the tooth, so your jawbone stays strong.

3. Eat What You Want

Dentures limit what youre able to eat. Lets take a look at just a few of the foods dentists recommend those with dentures should avoid:

Very hot liquids (coffee, tea, etc.)

Hard to chew foods (caramel, gum, etc.)

Hard (physically) foods (nuts, raw veggies, etc.)

All those restrictions are sure to take a toll on your preferred diet after all, who doesnt like a cup of hot coffee in the morning before work?

With dental implants, these restrictions dont apply. After youve had a few weeks to recover from dental implant surgery, go ahead and go nuts and eat those nuts. Drink coffee. Chew gum. Make life a little better with the foods you enjoy.

4. Protect Surrounding Teeth from Unnecessary Damage

Dentures, especially partial dentures, will damage the teeth around the missing tooth because you have to remove and replace your dentures over and over again. All that friction will lead to chips, cracks, breaks, you name it.

Once installed, dental implants have no effect whatsoever on the rest of your teeth; no damage is done.
